Haiti - FLASH : Bandits make the law at the Palace of Justice in Port-au-Prince 17/06/2022 09:51:20
5 days after the seizure of the Palace of Justice Me Jacques Lafontant, the Government Commissioner informs that arrangements have been made to transfer, on a provisional basis, several services to the Peace Court of the southern section of Port-au-Prince. In particular : the deed legalization service, the complaints service, the issuance of exequatures, the receipt of requests and correspondence from lawyers and litigants addressed to the Government Commissioner. Government Commissioner Lafontant announces the opening of a judicial investigation against the perpetrators, co-perpetrators and accomplices of this attack and requests the West Departmental Director of the PNH to accompany him to the Palace of Justice, under police escort with at least two armored vehicles, for the purpose of observing the damage and recovering files... For its part, "Je Klere" Foundation reports a gunshot wound and 7 vehicles in the hands of the bandits, including 2 belonging to the Public Prosecutor's Office and 2 to the Police. Office equipment such as computers, air conditioners, fans and chairs were also stolen. At the start of the week, we could even see furniture from the Palace of Justice on sale at rue du Champ de Mars with complete impunity... The Foundation urges the Police and the Army to dislodge the bandits who occupy the Palace of Justice, recover the stolen state property and restore the magistrates to their offices. The Government officially recognizes that the Palace of Justice is occupied and under the control of bandits, but no one is able to say when the police will regain control of the premises...
