Haiti - Weather : Floods in several municipalities in the West and Artibonite

The General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) reports that considerable damage has been recorded in Arcahaie where several localities are flooded due to the torrential rains of August 25, 2022. About 14 houses were destroyed, 65 damaged, 80 gardens devastated with more than 48 head of cattle missing.

On the night of August 27, the flooding of rivers and ravines caused the flooding of several houses in the town of Saint-Marc. The areas of Bois Coton, Dèyè Tèren, rue Pétion, rue Bonnet, Pivert, Block-Hauss and boulevard de la Liberté have been severely affected, according to the latest reports.

At least 2 bridges are heavily affected. These are the Pivert bridge, part of which suffered significant damage, and the Annonce bridge, which was invaded by alluvium. This situation complicates intra-municipal traffic, especially for the inhabitants of Lalouère, the 4th section of Haut de Saint Marc, and the city center.

The municipal civil protection committees mobilized quickly to assess the needs of the victims. Among these, several hundred were quickly placed in temporary shelters.

Under the coordination of the DGPC, several partners are present on the ground to ensure the management of emergencies caused by these floods which could worsen in the event of new rains.

The DGPC reminds the population, more particularly the inhabitants of areas at risk of flooding, to remain vigilant and to respect the usual safety instructions in the event of heavy rain.
