Haiti - Crisis : The DR deploys armored vehicles at the border

The Dominican-Haitian border is calm, but as a precautionary measure faced the increasing instability and violence in Haiti, the Dominican army on Friday (September 23) reinforced its line of defense along the border land strip adding surveillance helicopters and deploying American-made LAV-150 Commando armored vehicles in the Dajabón area

In addition, a special forces detachment for crisis situations has been added to the 12,000 soldiers already deployed along the border.

"Tension is high in Haiti, Port-au-Prince and has become a 'no man's land'," said a military authority explaining, "The movement of soldiers and military equipment is a preventive measure applicable by the armed corps, to be prepared for all eventualities [...] Whenever there are convulsions [in Haiti] there is more preparation here [...] we are ready for anything."

The crisis is increasingly complex and "explosive" forces the Dominican army to strengthen its presence at the border. Helicopter surveillance flights are constant and patrols (air, land, sea) monitor the border 24 hours a day.

It is a light wheeled and versatile armored vehicle, manufactured by the Cadillac Gage company of Detroit (Michigan). It is generally used for reconnaissance and infantry support tasks. It can reach 90 km/h and has a range between 600 km and 900 km depending on the version. It can be equipped with a whole assortment of weapons depending on the version. The LAV-150 commando is used in more than 20 countries.
