Haiti - FLASH : Visas revoked for several members of the Government, «Barbecue» target of the Security Council
On Wednesday, October 12, 2022, Brian Nichols, the Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs for the U.S. Department of State, said in a meeting with representatives from the Montana Group that the Biden administration has already "designated 11 people for visa sanctions" adding that he could not name these people in accordance with US policy...

According to a source familiar with the matter, this first list of people targeted by visa revocations would include 6 people from the Henry Government, including a senator, 2 ministers and 3 senior executives and 5 personalities outside the government, including 2 ex-senators and 3 ex-deputies...

These revocations could also apply for the Dominican Republic according to certain unofficial information.

Another list including names of bandits and sponsors was reportedly submitted to the Congressional Intelligence Committee by a civil society group. This list would also have been also handed to the Government and to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH).

In addition, the UN Security Council is reportedly considering creating a sanctions regime to impose an asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo on anyone who threatens the peace, security or stability of Haiti, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters.

The first person to be sanctioned would be Jimmy Cherizier, alias "Barbecue", Leader of the most powerful coalition of gangs in Haiti "G9 fanmi and allies" who is responsible with his men (for 33 days as of October 13) of the blockade of the Varreux oil terminal (70% of Haiti's reserves), blockade responsible for the paralysis and collapse of the Haitian economy and the humanitarian crisis...

"One of the challenges to effectively dealing with insecurity in Haiti is the link between the gangs and some of the elites in Haiti and outside of Haiti who support them and direct them for their own ends," said Thursday Antony Blinken back in Washington. "So we have worked together at the United Nations to impose sanctions on those who actually take actions that support violence and support gangs."
