Commemoration of the Marchaterre massacre
Several activities, including a Requiem mass and exhibitions of local products, were organized on Tuesday to mark the 93 years of the Marchaterre massacre in Les Cayes (December 6, 1929) perpetrated by United States Marine Corps troops who cowardly fired at Haitian peasants who were demonstrating peacefully against the American occupation. 83.5% of detainees in Haiti have never been tried
The latest report from the Directorate of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) reveals that in August 2022, 83.5% of detainees had been in prolonged preventive detention in Haiti, sometimes for many years and had never appeared before a judge. Out of a total of 11,718 detainees, only 1,935 have been tried and sentenced.

Kidnapping a growing industry
According to the UN, 1,107 cases of kidnappings were recorded between January and October 2022. The morning rush hour, between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., is also the time of kidnappings. Others are picked up during the afternoon rush hour, between 3 and 6 p.m. The ransoms can vary from 200 US dollars to 1 million dollars. Most victims come back alive if the ransom is paid...
