Haiti - Security : Ban Ki-moon confirms the gradual withdrawal of Minustah

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who announced last Friday that the time for a gradual withdrawal of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah) had come, has confirmed this Monday, September 19, 2011, to President Michel Martelly his intention of reducing Minustah's military component to pre-earthquake levels over the coming year. Recall that the Minustah forces had increased from 9.000 before January, 12 to 12,500 today.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also informed the President that the project of gradual withdrawal of Minustah, should be implemented in close collaboration with the Haitian government.

During the meeting they also discussed of the cooperation between the United Nations and the Government of Haiti, including on governance and rule of law issues.
