Haiti - History : Ceremony of commemoration of the Forefathers Day (Video)
"On this January 2nd, 2023, when we celebrate Forefathers Day, I gathered on the Altar of the Fatherland by laying a wreath there in memory of the founding fathers."

"I want, through this floral offering, to invite all the sons and daughters of the Nation to unite, like our ancestors, in order to prove to humanity that we are, finally, ready to enter a new era: that of change, reconciliation, unity, sharing and living together. So many virtues that were our strength and our pride of yesteryear,"
declared Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry on social networks

Learn more about Forefathers Day :
The Forefathers Day is a day dedicated to the memory of the founding fathers of Haiti and all those who gave their lives to the fight for independence at the beginning of the 19th century. Under Emperor Faustin 1st, the Constitution of the empire consecrated the date of January 2 as a national holiday in honor of Jean Jacques Dessalines. But this date became the day of the Aïeux during the celebration of the centenary of the Independence of Haiti in 1904. The then president, General Nord Alexis, took this decision to venerate the memory of all those who valiantly fought for the freedom of the country.

On this day, families share large meals, an important aspect of Haitian culture. Some traditional foods eaten on this day include "Diri djon djon" (a national rice dish with black mushrooms), "bètrouj" salad (a beetroot salad), and "Diri kole ak pwa" (a dish of rice and beans ).
