Haiti - UN : Haiti «endures conditions of nightmarish violence» dixit Volker Türk 09/03/2023 08:08:04
In his global update to the UN Human Rights Council, Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said Tuesday, March 7, 2023 that the people of Haiti "endures conditions of nightmarish violence", that "heavily armed gangs control services and access in large areas of the capital and the country [...] frequently carrying out murders, kidnappings and a level horrible sexual violence [...]"
He explained to the Council "The situation calls for a combination of responses : energizing the political process towards free and transparent elections; fully enforce the arms embargo; effective sanctions against those who sponsor and lead armed gangs; and international support to build the capacity of police and justice systems to fight widespread impunity and corruption."
Volker Turk, who visited Haiti from February 8 to 10 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38823-haiti-flash-haiti-a-living-nightmare-according-to-volker-turk-report-+-speech.html , said there was also a need to deploy "a time-limited specialized support force, with human rights safeguards."
