Haiti - Environment : Hurricane season 2023, NOAA forecasts

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has updated the statistics used to determine when a hurricane season is above, near, or below average.

Based on this update, an average hurricane season produces 14 named storms, 7 of which become hurricanes, 3 of which become major hurricanes.

NOAA forecasters from the Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, predict near-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year.

NOAA's outlook for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 30, 2023, predicts a 40% chance of a near-normal, 30% above-normal, and 30% lower than normal.

NOAA predicts 12 to 17 named storms in total (winds of 39 mph / 63 km/h or more). Of these 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph / 119 km / h or more), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5 with winds of 111 mph / 185 km / h or more).

NOAA has 70% confidence in these forecast ranges.
