Monday, May 29, 2023, the UN declared that Haiti, the Sahel and Sudan are now part of the areas on maximum alert, part of their population is exposed to famine or at risk of suffering it, corresponding to phase 5 of IPC a situation that requires "urgent" attention from the international community.

These 3 countries join Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen which were already on high alert.

In a joint report, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) explain "This is due to the severe restrictions on the movement of people and goods in Haiti, as well as in Burkina Faso and Mali, as well as the recent conflict in Sudan."
