Haiti - FLASH : The Consulate of Jamaica attacked, suspends its operations in Haiti

Jamaica's consular services in Haiti have been suspended indefinitely following an attack Monday night by heavily armed individuals on a commercial establishment that houses the Jamaican Consulate in Port-au-Prince.

Kamina Johnson Smith, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, said the Sun Auto dealership and the Consulate were ransacked, looted and set on fire by gangs on Monday night.

Ms Johnson Smith expressed her sympathy with the owners of the business, adding that the department was awaiting further details of the incident.

She said the attack strengthened the resolve of the Government of Jamaica "to play a role in supporting all efforts to bring Haiti back to the peace and prosperity it and its people deserve."
