Haiti - CARICOM : The Prime Minister of Dominica asks for more support for Haiti and urges China

Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica, called for more support for Haiti to meet the country's humanitarian needs amid escalating gang violence.

"We have committed as a Community to supporting the Haitian people to broker a Haitian-led solution to the instability that they now face. It is a crisis that requires our continued support and the support of the wider international community," Prime Minister Skerrit said during the opening ceremony of the 45th Conference of Heads of Government in Trinidad and -Tobago.

He said CARICOM outreach has met with a favorable response, but sustained engagement is needed to help Haiti stop criminal gang violence…

"We are well aware that it is just the beginning, and our engagement must build from that and we must keep the dialogue going until there is not only light at the end of the tunnel, but a station for the stakeholders to disembark from the train, united in purpose and action"

In addition, Roosevelt Skerrit urged China (which remains skeptical) to intervene https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-39975-haiti-security-council-russia-and-china-skeptical-about-a-military-intervention-in-haiti.html) to support CARICOM's proposal to deploy an international security force to restore peace and stability in Haiti, for a Security Council resolution on Haiti and not to use his right of veto.

Recalling that China, the second largest provider of peacekeeping forces to the UN Security Council, was eager to help "to alleviate the difficulties of Haiti" to the extent possible. Recalling that in the past, China had provided "support" to all resolutions on Haiti and even deployed peacekeeping personnel in the country.
