Haiti - Humanitarian : Europe releases 10 million euros in emergency aid

The Haitian population is facing the consequences of overlapping crises, fueled in particular by generalized violence, the ongoing economic collapse, a context of socio-political instability and an epidemic of cholera. The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Haiti has doubled over the past five years to 5.2 million, nearly half of the country's population. The percentage of Haitians in a situation of urgent food insecurity compared to the total population is the second highest in the world https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-39828-haiti-humanitarian-food-insecurity-rate-in-haiti-2nd-highest-in-the-world.html

Monday, July 17, 2023, the European Union (EU) announced the release of an emergency envelope of 10 million euros to deal with the unprecedented increase in humanitarian needs in Haiti. This brings to 18.5 million euros the amount of the humanitarian envelope committed to Haiti this year.

The emergency envelope released by the EU aims to enable humanitarian organizations to strengthen their means of action and respond to the most urgent needs, focusing mainly on food and nutrition. The financial envelope will also support health care, cash assistance, protection and logistics, in both rural and urban areas.

Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management said “Hunger, widespread violence, epidemics, disasters. When we ask ourselves about the suffering that a human being can endure, we must remember that the Haitian population endures all of this, and much more. The EU does not forget this. As we celebrate the fruitful partnership between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, helping the people of Haiti remains our top concern and priority in the region."
