Haiti - UN FLASH : Antonio Guterres urges the States of the region to join Kenya
Although there has been broad support for an international rapid reaction force with several countries expressing interest in contributing, so far none have volunteered to lead such a force.

Monday, July 31, 2023, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, welcomed Kenya's willingness to lead an international force to help Haitian police combat gang violence.

Let's recall that Kenya is ready to deploy 1,000 police officers to help train and assist the Haitian police to "restore normalcy in the country and protect strategic installations," Kenyan Foreign Minister Alfred Mutua said on Saturday https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-40134-haiti-flash-kenya-agrees-to-deploy-1-000-police-officers-in-haiti.html

António Guterres "values Kenya's consideration to possibly lead a non-U.N. multinational force", UN spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters on Monday, adding "The Secretary-General reiterates his call to the Security Council to support such a non-U.N. international operation and encourages member states, particularly from the region, to join forces with Kenya."

Although there has been widespread support for a rapid action force with several countries expressing interest in contributing, so far none have volunteered to lead such a deployment.

"I'm very happy to see that many other countries are becoming involved to help," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Monday July 31 when asked about Kenya's announcement.
