The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, was visiting Haiti this week where she met Monday, the President Michel Martelly to discuss national priorities and key challenges, before visiting the same day, the Isaïe Jeanty Hospital, located in Chancerelles, a Hospital where CIDA is contributing to an initiative to provide free health services to low-income pregnant women.

"This is a very important trip, as Canadians demonstrated their support for the people in Haiti who were affected by the earthquake. The Government of Canada recognizes that the reconstruction process will take several years, and we are committed to standing with our Haitian friends during this process," had stated Minister Oda.

Canada pledged $400 million over two years to support Haiti's Action Plan for National Recovery and Development and toward the priorities of the Haitian government. This was in addition to Canada's $150 million in immediate humanitarian assistance provided to Haiti following the January 12, 2010.

During her stay, which ends on Thursday, the Minister Oda has measured the progress that has been made and has learned more about the new Haitian government's reconstruction plans to ensure that Canada's support will be effective and make a real difference.

To Léogâne Beverley J. Oda visited a CIDA-funded water and sanitation initiative supported by Oxfam Quebec. Minister Oda was able to get a first-hand appreciation of the importance of these structures for students at the Haiti Love Mission school.

She also visited in company of Mr. Conrad Sauve, Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Red Cross, a CIDA-funded semi-permanent houses and temporary shelters initiative. During her visit, Minister Oda witnessed the living conditions of women and girls residing in temporary shelters in Léogâne.
