Haiti - FLASH Haitian Diaspora : More than 1.6 billion US dollars sent from the Dominican Rep. in Haiti 21/09/2023 09:27:28
Haiti is the largest recipient of formal remittances sent by the Dominican Republic, in fact, between 2020 and until June 2023, of the 2 billion, 357 million dollars sent by residents of the Dominican economy to other countries, more than 50% reached Haitian nationals. During the first 6 months of this year, remittances from the Dominican Republic amounted to $443.7 million, an amount 33.4% higher than the same period of the previous year. The report specifies that among the main destinations of outgoing remittances for the period, Haiti comes first with 65.8%, followed by the United States with 18.5%. According to the study of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) "Remittances to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021" between 2017 and 2021 (5 years), Haiti received a total of 13 billion 852.9 million dollars. Let's remember that during this period the minimum wage of the average Haitian payroll was 12,494 pesos monthly but since June 2023 the minimum wage has been increased to 19,939 pesos (47,654.21 gourdes 1 pesos = 2.39 gourdes 9/21/2023).
