Truckers from Haiti and the Dominican Republic are in talks to reach an agreement and reopen the border to trade between the two countries.

Steven Josef, President of the Juana Méndez Truckers Association in Haiti, said he had received several proposals from the Dominican side and indicated that he would meet with the Haitian Government to find out its position and that on Saturday they could give a response.

He explained that among Haiti's requests, there is access for businessmen to Dajabón to sell and buy, specifying that this point was already approved. He also asked that equality and respect prevail on both sides.

Santiago Riverón Arias, the Mayor of Dajabón, while affirming that the reactivation of trade is a necessity, remains cautious about the possibility of an agreement recalling that the Haitian authorities are asking for more flexibility in the visa process, regularization of students and other restrictive measures imposed by the Dominican Government. He added that further measures have been agreed and that the Dominican authorities will report soon...

However, we do not know what the Dominican Government is ready to concede or relax and under what conditions...
