Haiti - Health Technology: Introduction of thermoablation in Haiti

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in support of the Ministry of Public Health in Haiti, organized training for trainers on several sites in the Haitian Great North with the aim of strengthening the prevention of precancerous lesions of the cervix.

This intensive training targeted 12 professionals from 10 health institutions in the North, North-East, North-West, Artibonite and Center. The main objective being to introduce thermoablation technology into the public health system in order to allow Haitian women to benefit from early treatment and to increase screening capacities for precancerous lesions of the cervix. In addition to the theoretical content presented during the first day, practical sessions were carried out in particular for the introduction of a new device called “thermo coagulator”.

Simulations were carried out to ensure the participants' mastery of the device, following which 3 days of clinical practice enabled the screening of 427 patients, 49 of whom were treated by thermocoagulation.

At the end of the training, OPS provided each department that participated in the training with a device, a thermo coagulator to facilitate thermoablation.

Learn more about thermoablation :

Thermoablation is an effective and affordable alternative to cryotherapy for the treatment of precancerous cervical lesions. The technology consists of applying a probe tip heated between 100°C and 120°C to destroy precancerous lesions. It is done using a very simple device, the thermo coagulator. Its ease of use, maintenance and its possibility of operating on battery makes it suitable for primary health care establishments and local structures.
