Yolanda León, President of Grupo Jaragua, an NGO dedicated to the management and preservation of biodiversity, indicated that the groups of illegal migrants crossing the Sierra de Bahoruco park is not a new phenomenon, but it pointed out "What is unusual is the size of this group and their carefree attitude and the fact that they walk during the day, we had until now seen small groups walking only at night, which also suggests that they are protected in some way." The Haitians filmed crossing the Sierra de Bahoruco to enter Dominican territory, most of them were captured by members of the Dominican Army in the mountains of Polo, Barahona.
