Haiti - Politic : Minustah and France react to the arrest of Deputy Bélizaire

The Special Representative of Secretary-General and Chief of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah), Mariano Fernández Amunátegui is concerned about the climate of political tension created by the arrest, yesterday evening, in Port au Prince, of the Deputy Arnel Bélizaire.

This tension, harmful to the best interests of the nation, may hinder the implementation of the Government's program to the detriment of the Haitian population which is eager to see become a reality the promises of its elected.

In order to preserve the climate conducive to the democratic stabilization of the country and strengthen the rule of law, the Special Representative encourages the dialogue and invites the authorities to clarify the legal process, consistent with the Constitution, which led to the arrest of the Deputy Bélizaire, in order to restore the good cooperation between the executive and legislative.

For its part, France invites the Government and Parliament to comply with the procedures prescribed by the Constitution of Haiti in terms of separation of powers and of parliamentary immunity.
