Haiti - 220th anniversary of independence : Official speech by PM Henry
Monday January 1st, 2024, once again, the celebration of Independence Day could not take place in Gonaïves due to insecurity and it is therefore at the Haitian National Pantheon Museum (MUPANAH) that the Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry accompanied by the President of the Court of Cassation, members of the Ministerial Cabinet and the High Transitional Council, laid a wreath of flowers at the feet of the Heroes of Independence. This highly symbolic gesture reflects the infinite gratitude of the Haitian Nation to its ancestors for their prowess, the fruit of unity and deep aspirations for freedom.

Then he went to the courtyard of the Museum for his official speech in the presence of the President and members of the judiciary, Ministers, senior state officials, members of the diplomatic and consular corps, and the Superior Court. of Accounts and Administrative Litigation (CAS/CA), representatives of international institutions and numerous personalities.

Excerpts :
"[...] Celebrating the 220th year of our independence is also a duty to remember. In 1804, Haiti committed an act of bravery that resonated far beyond our borders, inspiring other nations to embark on the path to freedom. Today, we remember Toussaint Louverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Claire Heureuse, Henry Christophe, Alexandre Pétion, Zabeth, Capois La Mort, Boisrond Tonnerre, Denise Bazile known as Défilée la fou , as well as all those who contributed to forging our nation.

We pay tribute to these heroes of the revolution, to these visionaries who sought to build a just and equitable society. On this solemn day, we must also recognize the shortcomings and constraints we face as a Nation. We must remain vigilant and determined to overcome the obstacles that stand in our way.

Celebrating our 220 years of independence should not only be a retrospective, but also a call to action. We must commit to honoring the legacy of our ancestors by working for a stronger, more united and more prosperous Haiti. This requires a collective effort, a national solidarity that transcends divisions. [...]"
