Haiti - Politic : Laurent Lamothe in New York

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurent Lamothe was in New York this Friday, November 4, he met with the new Consul-General ai, Mr. Charles A. Forbin and his staff around the new directive of the Chancellery of Haiti, making among others know to the world that Haiti is open for investment.

The Chancellor stressed the crucial importance of the Consulate of New York, because of the large number of compatriots who benefit from its services. In this sense, he spent instructions to staff of the Consulate with the objective of strengthening links with the Haitian live in this region, and encourage them to travel more often in Haiti. Whenever possible, encourage them to return to their countries to help the President Martelly in the reconstruction process, since the engagement of the Diaspora is a priority for his administration.

During his visit Mr. Lamothe and his team met with Mr. Edmond Mulet, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations to discuss the current peacekeeping operation in Peace Haiti.

During the meeting, the Minister Lamothe made ​​particular reference to the resolution A/65/655/Add.1 of the General Assembly which allows qualified candidates of Haitian descent to be hired as international staff of the Mission. This practice has not been previously authorized, thereby reducing the ability of foreign Haitian to directly contribute to the peace operation in Haiti.

The Minister and the Assistant Secretary-General Edmond Mulet, also discussed the plan of President Martelly to remobilize the army of Haiti and a budget of $ 17 million proposed for the construction of a new headquarters for the Mission [Minustah] to leave the temporary premises of the airport and allow the formation of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), which should, ultimately, count more than 20,000 police officers.

Moreover, this Saturday evening, the Minister Lamothe is expected, in place of President Martelly, to the annual dinner fundraiser organized by the Happy Hearts Fund of the supermodel Petra Nemcova. This year emphasis is placed on the education in Haiti. Half of the funds raised, estimated at more than $ 10 million will be paid to the Haitian education system.
