Haiti - Health : The United States and Haiti want eradicate the lymphatic filariasis
Along with the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume, the former President Jimmy Carter and U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth Merten have launched a campaign of $ 1.5 million, which aims to administer medication to the people to eradicate the lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, in the region of Port-au-Prince, the last region to begin the treatment protocol and move the country on the road of the eradication of this terrible disease.

The Ambassador Merten stressed the importance of this campaign "Diseases like lymphatic filariasis do more than cause pain for those they afflict; they prevent their victims from reaching their full potential and impair their ability to support their families and be active and productive members of society [...] ...Today we renew our battle against lymphatic filariasis with the launch of this campaign of treatment of disease through the municipalities of Port-au-Prince [...] it's a tragedy that Haiti is among the only four countries in this hemisphere where lymphatic filariasis is still present [...] Health is one of the four most important sectors, as part of the aid that the U.S. gives to Haiti [...] We work every day to support the Ministry of Health to strengthen the health system in Haiti..."

For her part, the Minister of Health, Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume, argued that "through the commitment of executives of the public health and the determination of the ministers who preceded me, we have worked to eliminate the disease in the country, and of strong support of some international agencies and local partners and, despite some weaknesses known, the national program to eliminate the filariasis has been established. . The purpose of the latter is to arrive by 2020 to significantly reduce if not eliminate the lymphatic filariasis, as requested by the World Health Organization..."

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who was present at the ceremony as guest of honor declared "...he Carter Center, is the largest center of the world which combat this infectious disease, that is why we decided to remove this two diseases, lymphatic filariasis and malaria, we decided to make efforts to eliminate them of the country [...] for malaria for the next 10 years we are talking of a budget of about $194 million. t the time, we thought to have $49 million to eliminate lymphatic filariasis only in Haiti, we had develop a 10-year plan to combat these diseases, but unfortunately the earthquake has stopped all this work..."

Lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, is a parasitic infection that occurs when the parasitics filaria, responsible for the disease, are transmitted to humans by mosquitoes [kylexes] causing painful swelling of limbs and genitalia, preventing those who are suffering to lead a life productive and active. The transmission of lymphatic filariasis can be interrupted by administering a combination of drugs to the entire population of endemic communities once a year, and this over a period of 5 to 8 years. It is found in Haiti in at least 117 municipalities and affects a population estimated to 15,000 people. Dr. Jean-François Vely, Coordinator of the Office of fight against malaria and filariasis states that from 2002 to today, the national program against filariasis covers 78 municipalities, and is funded by the Bill Gates Foundation to the tune of 2 million U.S. dollars per year.
