Haiti - Bahamas / Turkish Islands : More than 300 Haitian Boat People and 3 boats intercepted

Monday April 8, 2024, the security and immigration forces of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands reported having arrested more than 300 Haitian migrants last weekend in the waters of these territories during 3 separate interceptions.

The Bahamas Defense Coast Guard stopped an overloaded boat in Inagua, in the south of the archipelago, which was transporting 257 illegal Haitian migrants (218 men and 39 women). Agents of the Ministry of Environment and Coastal Resources, supported by the Turks and Caicos Islands Immigration Regiment, arrested 30 Haitians (20 men and ten women) aboard a high-speed boat stolen from its owner in Providenciales according to Mat Newton Deputy Commissioner of Turks and Caicos Islands Police.

Newton also said authorities received a second alert from the U.S. Coast Guard about another boat near Inaugua and the southwest coast of Caicos. Several agencies were mobilized and managed to intercept a second group of 30 illegal Haitian migrants.
