Haiti - FLASH : The Palace of 365 doors threatened with demolition by the «Gran Grif» gang

Members of Savien's "Gran Grif" gang threaten to demolish the royal castle of Belle-Rivière, better known as the Palace of 365 Doors in Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite, built in 1820 by Louis Dupeyrac to serve as a residence at his Highness Henri 1st., King of Haiti.

Fearing that this fully restored historic monument will serve as a base for the troops of the International Security Support Mission to attack them, just like the police station that they have started to demolish and the Administrative Complex which houses several public institutions, including the town hall.

Bertide Horace, Spokesperson for the Commission for Dialogue, Reconciliation and Awareness to Save the Artibonite, aware of the anger weighing on the Palace of 365 Doors, began talks with various civil society organizations as well as with local authorities to find solutions and safeguard this historical heritage, a potential source of income as a tourist attraction. Bertide Horace, appealed to the bandits to reconsider this project, likely to fuel the anger of the population against them...

The Palace measures 68 m long by 11 m wide. Originally the project was to include 365 doors (one per day) which was not the case in the end. On its west facade is a large rotunda 12 meters in diameter. The walls of the palace are made of stone masonry and clay bricks bonded with lime mortar. The first restoration work was undertaken in 1932. Although the restoration probably did not follow the rules of the art, it slowed the deterioration of the ruins and protected them from bad weather. In 1995, declared a national heritage site, it underwent another restoration after the 2010 earthquake, the palace was completely restored. However, today, the Palace is once again deteriorating due to lack of maintenance...
