Haiti - FLASH : A Haiti expert predicts that young people will leave gangs when the Mission will be in action
Monday May 27, 2024, Diego Da Rin, consultant and Haiti expert working with the International Crisis Group, in an interview with France 24 shared his views on the potential effects of the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission led by Kenya

He said experts on the Haiti crisis predict that when the mission is operationalized, the gangs will lose some of their members who would have to throw in the towel.

According to Da Rin, young Haitian gang members will leave the armed gangs due to the intensity of the fighting, emphasizing "The gangs know that they are facing a force stronger than them and that is why they oppose to the deployment."

Da Rin said that at first, the gangs would do everything possible to attack foreign troops. However, when the clashes intensify the gangs will retreat.

He recalls that "The new Haitian Government will need significant support from the international community to organize elections, restore security and put state institutions back in place."

In conclusion, Da Rin called on the international community to put in place tougher sanctions against anyone financing or assisting gangs, stressing that this would limit access to resources for gangs.
