Haiti - CEP : Strong tension and divergences within the Protestant sector in Haiti

Following the call for applications for the position of Electoral Representative of Reformed Faiths on the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), the Executive Council of the Conference of Haitian Pastors (COPAH) expressed its dissatisfaction in an open letter addressed to Pastor Calixte Fleuridor, President of the Protestant Federation of Haiti (FPH).

COPAH deplored the late receipt of the invitation on Friday July 12, while the deadline for submitting applications is set for Monday July 15 "The delay in the delivery of the invitation letter and the cavalier manner in which the Protestant Federation of Haiti, which behaves like the 'Pope' of the sector, does not inspire confidence and suggests suspicious maneuvers [...]"

COPAH also deplores the lack of consultation in the appointment of the electoral advisor.

The letter criticizes the lack of consultation in the appointment of the electoral advisor and accuses Pastor Fleuridor of trying to impose his choice "You are trying to use your role as facilitator to choose a representative of the Protestant sector without consulting respectable and respected organizations" and asks : "Why do you want to manipulate this simple process ? Why do you refuse to participate in a democratic exercise crucial for the serenity and future of the Protestant sector ?"

COPAH also denounces the unilateral sending of the invitation to organizations not members of the FPH, thus leaving a false impression of consensus.

COPAH warns against any attempt to impose a representative on the CEP without the agreement of all organizations.

To remedy this situation, the Conference of Haitian Pastors insists on the need to create an inclusive commission ensuring a fair and representative choice, essential to maintain the unity and credibility of the Protestant sector and recalls in its letter "By consulting the archives of your organization, you will see that this approach was followed by your predecessor, Dr. Sylvain Exantus, which made it possible to calmly choose an electoral representative in 2016 [...]"

In conclusion, COPAH reiterates its commitment to democracy and the rule of law and warns "We will never accept that the choice of the representative of reformed religions is made in total opacity for unacknowledged and unacceptable political reasons..."
