Haiti - Media : Journalists accused of links with gangs, AJH wants explanations from DCPJ

The Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH) sent a letter to Inspector General Pierre René François, Central Director of the Judicial Police (DCPJ) to request an information meeting regarding the cases of journalists accused of having links with criminal groups

Letter from the AJH :

"[...] Mr. Inspector General;

The Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH) commends the work of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCPJ) in the fight against banditry and crime. These phenomena have plunged the country into an unprecedented security and humanitarian crisis.

As part of the actions of the DCPJ, press workers are arrested. Others are identified in a document dated July 15, 2024 and attributed to the Criminal Affairs Bureau of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police. The AJH, in its mission to ensure respect for freedom of the press and the ethical and disciplinary rules governing the exercise of the profession of journalist, requests from you an information meeting around these files that are making headlines in the media.

Mr. Inspector General ;

The approach of the Association of Haitian Journalists does not consist in influencing or interfering in the work of the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police against crime and banditry. It will allow the AJH to gather elements for an objective assessment of the situation of these press workers.

Pending this information meeting, the Association of Haitian Journalists asks you to accept, Mr. Inspector General, its patriotic greetings.

Jacques Desrosiers

Secretary General"
