Haiti - FLASH : Peligré power plant shut down under threat

On Monday, September 2nd in the afternoon, a group of highly motivated protesters went to the Péligre hydroelectric power plant to protest against a power shortage in the city of Mirebalais and in the Central Plateau in general and to force the shutdown of the hydroelectric power plant, implying that the worst could happen if they refused..

Reacting to this action, Electricité d'Haïti (EDH) draws the attention of the public in general and its subscribers in particular to the fact that the electricity production of the Péligre Hydroelectric Power Plant has been reduced to zero since Monday, September 2nd, 2024.

"This unfortunate situation is due to acts of invasion that border vandalism perpetrated by so-called authorities under the false pretext that the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince cannot be supplied if the Haut and Bas Plateaux are not !

Such actions, far from meeting the electricity needs of the population, only make the difficulties of the EDH more complicated because the operating equipment of the Power Plants is expensive and difficult to repair, maintain or even replace.

The EDH would like to point out that the Central Plateau is deprived of electricity because 2 transformers have irreversibly broken down due to overload and especially the impossibility of providing the necessary technical assistance in time since the West is practically cut off from the rest of the country.

Despite the announcement of an alternative solution proposed by the Central Administration while waiting for the adoption of definitive and lasting measures, the blocking of the Péligre hydroelectric plant was nevertheless inevitable…

The EDH urgently appeals to the authorities concerned to not only conduct an investigation to identify, judge and punish the perpetrators of such acts that penalize the population in general, but also to take the necessary measures to secure the Péligre Hydroelectric Plant, a strategic structure for the Haitian State.

EDH reiterates to subscribers in the Centre Department its willingness to resume service as soon as possible once the security environment has been restored for its employees and technicians; it also requests their active participation in protecting the equipment of the Haitian State."
