Haiti - FLASH : The United States will not allow the renewal of conditional stays

The United States Government will not allow beneficiaries of the Humanitarian Parole program to renew their conditional stay beyond the 2 years provided for in the program.

An eminently political decision that comes one month before the presidential elections on November 5, while the program is facing a barrage of criticism from Republicans who intend to eliminate it if they return to power.

More than half a million people from four beneficiary countries have already entered the country under this program, which began in October 2022 for Venezuelans and was extended to the three other nationalities in February 2023 (110,000 Cubans, 210,000 Haitians, 93,000 Nicaraguans and 117,000 Venezuelans have entered the United States under this program according to the latest DHS data).

Let's recall that the Conditional Stay Program (Biden program), which requires having a sponsor in the United States, grants beneficiaries permission to enter and work legally in the country for a period of 2 years. At the end of this period, people benefiting from this program who have not applied for another immigration benefit "will have to leave the United States [...] or will be placed in deportation proceedings" explained Naree Ketudat, DHS spokesperson

Some Haitians who arrived in the country through this program between October 2022 and June 24, 2024, the date of confirmation of Haiti's Extension and Redesignation for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) may be able to remain in the country if they apply https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-42655-haiti-flash-good-news-extension-and-redesignation-of-haiti-for-tps-confirmed.html . However, those who do not qualify for TPS, or who have no other legal immigration option, will no longer be allowed to remain in the United States.

Should be noted that in the event of a Republican victory in the next election, Trump has declared his intention to revoke the TPS at least for Haitians

The deadline for the first conditional stays granted to Haitians will begin in January 2025...
