iciHaiti - FLASH : More than 1,200 dead in three months

According to data collected by the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) from July to September 2024, 1,223 people were killed and 522 others were injured in gang violence and the fight against gangs. At the same time, at least 170 people were kidnapped for ransom.

Criminal violence continued to be concentrated in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, as well as in the Artibonite department.

BINUH is also concerned about the continuation of acts of sexual violence committed by gangs against women and girls. Several victims were attacked while traveling on foot or in public transport vehicles. Some of them were killed after being raped.

The impact of violence on children remains particularly worrying. During the third quarter, at least 59 boys and girls were killed or injured.

Faced with this situation of insecurity and violence, BINUH recommends that the international community keep Haiti on its agenda and accelerate the full deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS), in accordance with human rights norms and standards.
