Haiti - Politic : 30th anniversary of the Ministry for the Status of Women

Friday, November 8, 2024, Marie Françoise Suzan, the Minister of Women's Affairs in the presence of Leslie Voltaire, President pro tempore of the Transitional Council, Transitional Advisor Frinel Joseph, Prime Minister Garry Conille, members of the ministerial cabinet and several other important personalities celebrated the 30 years of existence of the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Women's Rights around the theme "Toujou menm konba pou yon sosyete san fòs kote." In his speech, Leslie Voltaire praised and congratulated the great efforts of the country's women. He took the opportunity to ask them to continue working for the advancement of society because "no major positive change can be made without the participation of women."

Excerpt from the speech of the Minister for the Status of Women :

"When this Ministry was created by decree on November 8, 1994, it was difficult to imagine the extent of the impact it would have on Haitian society [...]

So many challenges met, with always the same unwavering desire to advance women's rights in Haiti. [...]

Women's voices are no longer just heard, they are listened to, respected and taken into account in the most important decisions concerning the future of our Nation. Women are now key players in the development of Haiti, and for three decades, the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights has been at the forefront of this fight [...]

Together, these achievements illustrate the impact of the Ministry in building a more equitable Haitian society, where women's rights are not only recognized but actively protected and promoted.

[...] The history of the Ministry is a story of resilience. It is also a story of alliances, of solidarity between women and with men, because the promotion of women's rights does not only concern women, but all of Haitian society. [...]

On this day, we are not content to simply celebrate the past, but we are resolutely looking to the future. There is still much to be accomplished: strengthening the legislative framework, intensifying the fight against violence against women, guaranteeing young girls' access to quality education and offering women more responsibilities. The road to equality is still long, but we are moving forward with confidence and determination. By celebrating these 30 years of existence, we reaffirm today our common commitment to a better future for all. [...]

Long live the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights!

Long live the fight for equality in Haiti !"
