Haiti - 221st Vertières : Message from Prime Minister Fils-Aimé
Monday, November 18, 2024, as part of the commemoration of the 221st anniversary of the victory of the indigenous army over the colonial forces at the Battle of Vertières in 1803, which marked the beginning of the end of the slave world order; Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, the new Prime Minister delivered a message that we are publishing and that we invite you to read and share.

Message from Prime Minister Fils-Aimé :

"Today, November 18, 2024, we commemorate the 221st anniversary of the glorious Battle of Vertières, a moment that indelibly marked the history of Haiti and that of humanity.

On November 18, 1803, our ancestors, driven by unwavering courage and a devouring thirst for freedom, achieved the impossible: to snatch victory from the hands of a colonial power, thus asserting our right to independence and dignity.

This glorious epic, engraved in universal history, reminds us of the courage and unity of our ancestors who, driven by an unwavering faith in freedom, overcame injustice to offer the world the first example of resilience and independence born of a struggle against oppression.

These heroes of Vertières, through their bravery and determination, have left us much more than a military victory. This legacy, dear compatriots, calls us to unity, unity and harmony.

Yo te ba nou yon nasyon ki te fonde sou ideyal libète, jistis ak solidarite.

Nan moman difisil sa yo n ap travèse a, kote nap fè fas ak anpil enstabilite ak defi, li enpòtan anpil pou nou makànen ak lespri Vètyè, lespri sakrifis.

We must find the path of living together and fraternity. Our ancestors, although faced with multiple adversities, were able to join forces for a higher goal which is Freedom.

Today, it is our duty to rekindle the flame of unity in order to overcome difficulties and work together to build a Haiti where every citizen can live in dignity, peace and reconciliation,

We must put our hearts to the test, for us to understand freedom, and for us to accept freedom.

Heirs of a famous and unique history, it is our responsibility to perpetuate this spirit of resistance and courage.

In my youth, I hope that we will be able to live up to all the people of Haiti.

Together, we can write a new page of history, a page where unity, solidarity and hope triumph over difficulties. This is the most beautiful tribute we can pay to the heroes of Vertières.

Long live Vertières ! Long live the Indigenous Army ! Long live Haiti !

Thank you."
