Haiti - Politic : Violence against Women, the CPT orally...

Monday, November 25, 2024, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) reaffirms its commitment to combating all forms of gender-based violence. Observations, words, but nothing concrete...

éThis day, under the theme 'Goumen kont Vyolans sou Fanm ak Tifi, Ranmase fòs nou, Aji!', reminds us that protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls is an absolute priority for any society that aspires to justice, peace and progress.

In the current context of widespread insecurity and multiple crises in Haiti, women and girls are subjected to aggravated violence, including sexual abuse, domestic violence and serious violations of their fundamental rights. These acts are unacceptable and must stop.

The Presidential Transitional Council calls for immediate and total national mobilization to :

l. Ensure effective protection of women and girls by strengthening institutional frameworks and reception and assistance structures;

2. Rigorously apply existing laws to punish perpetrators of violence and put an end to impunity;

3. Promote gender equality and the empowerment of women through their active participation in governance and/or national development;

4. Raise awareness among the population through educational actions to transform social norms and prevent violence in a sustainable manner.

The CPT wishes to emphasize that the fight against violence against women and girls requires the unity of all the vital forces of the Nation : public institutions, civil society, communities, as well as our international partners.

The CPT launches a solemn appeal to act together to build a society where the rights of women and girls are respected, protected and valued. The time has come to combine all our energies and act with determination against this scourge.

On this symbolic day, the CPT encourages all national and local institutions to implement concrete policies to eradicate gender-based violence and build a better future for all women and girls in Haiti."
