Haiti - Insecurity : UN evacuates non-essential personnel in Haiti

UN evacuates non-essential personnel in Haiti due to violence by armed gangs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama confirms the arrival of two humanitarian flights from Haiti, one arriving on Tuesday, November 26 and the other United Nations plane is expected this Wednesday, November 27 in Panama City with 22 international police advisers and two UN officials on board, who will stopover in the country for a maximum of 72 hours.

The departure of some humanitarian, diplomatic and UN personnel in recent days comes after the intensification of violence by armed groups and gangs, who have taken control of more than 80% of Port-au-Prince, generating terror and producing massive displacements of the population.

The agencies and entities of the United Nations system operating in Haiti have nevertheless insisted on their desire to remain in the country. "Our humanitarian operations have continued since the beginning of the escalation of the crisis," said Ulrika Richardson, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti, "We have provided thousands of meals, medical and psychosocial care and clean water."

Despite the increasing dangers, UN humanitarian organizations are committed to remaining in Haiti to help the most vulnerable survive the current crisis.
