Haiti - 37th anniversary : PM pays tribute to the martyrs of Vaillant Alley

On November 29, 2024, the 37th anniversary of the Vaillant Alley Massacre, the Nation remembers, with a heavy heart, these peaceful citizens inhabited by the dream of a democratic Haiti who went to the polls with ballots in hand, fulfilling their civic duty for these first elections under the 1987 Constitution and who never returned home..

On that fateful Sunday, November 29, 1987, about twenty voters were cowardly assassinated at the Vaillant Alley polling station by neo-Duvalierist paramilitaries, with the active complicity of the Haitian Armed Forces, at the Argentine Bellegarde National School, remains a symbol of the terror that surrounded this first post-Duvalier election. This tragedy, marked by blood and tears, forever reminds us of the inestimable price of the right to vote, democracy and freedom.

In this circumstance, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed a profound thought that reflects the government's state of mind:

Message from Prime Minister Fils-Aimé :

"These courageous souls, who fell for believing in a better future, will never be forgotten. To their forever grieving families, we say : your pain is ours and the sacrifice of these heroes who fell in the field of duty remains a light in our darkness.

In these times when insecurity stifles our hopes, this tragedy of 1987 recalls the tireless fight for our survival as a people. Every life lost today in violence is a reminder of these past crimes. We must fight so that such a disaster never happens again.

The memory of Vaillant Alley is a vibrant call for justice, against impunity, for dignity, in the face of barbarity and security, so that every citizen can live without fear.

The sacrifice of the victims of 1987 urges us not to look away, to continue the fight for Peace and democracy. The blood of our compatriots shed on November 29, 1987 for our freedom, must remind us that Haiti deserves better.

Honor to them. Long live the memory of these heroes. Long live Haiti !"
