Haiti - Cuba : Towards a strengthening of cooperation in health matters

On Friday, December 20, 2024, Dr. Duckenson Lorthe Blema, Minister of Public Health, met with Carlos Moya Ramos, Cuban Ambassador to Haiti, as part of an in-depth discussion on cooperation between the two Nations in the field of health.

This meeting, which is part of a context of strengthening bilateral ties, provided an opportunity to review Cuba's various initiatives and contributions to improving health services in Haiti.

Among the points discussed, the significant contribution of the Cuban medical brigade, which has played an important role in responding to health crises, providing medical care in often neglected regions.

The Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti, which celebrated its 26th anniversary in Haiti on December 5, has carried out more than 36 million consultations, 200,827 deliveries, including 22,582 by cesarean section, and 72,593 surgical interventions during this period. 249,318 elderly people and 210,100 patients were rehabilitated in the physiotherapy services.

With Operation Miracle, to improve the vision of Haitians, 73,404 people were operated on by Cuban ophthalmologists.

Regarding laboratory tests, 1,270,416 were performed, 39,034 x-rays, 745,651 ultrasounds, 114,996 endoscopies, 115,309 electrocardiograms for a total of 77,391 lives saved.

Another important topic discussed concerned the increase in the number of scholarships awarded to Haitian students, especially for the scarcest medical specialties in the country. This initiative aims to train a new generation of qualified health professionals who will be able to meet the growing needs of the Haitian health system.
