Haiti - FLASH : Creation of emergency cells in Haitian diplomatic missions in the USA

Following President Trump's recent decisions on the arrest and deportation of illegal immigrants, the Haitian Chancellery in a circular note addressed on January 24, 2025 to the Embassy of Haiti in Washington D.C. and to the Consulates accredited to the United States, asks them to "create as soon as possible, a monitoring and emergency unit in each mission in order to assist and support Haitians who would potentially be targeted by these decisions."

"Each unit will be responsible for collecting information to better guide, direct and inform Haitian nationals in their jurisdiction or constituency on the rights granted to them in the event of arrest, incarceration, preventive detention or any other form of restrictive measures, in accordance with American law and international conventions subscribed to by the two States.

"To this end, the Embassy and the various Consular Posts will take the necessary steps, upon receipt of this letter, to communicate to the Haitian community in their jurisdiction or constituency the phone lines available to contact the emergency unit if necessary and in case of necessity 24/7.

"A weekly report with appropriate observations and recommendations should be communicated to the Chancellery on the evolution of the situation in the jurisdiction as well as on the activities of the emergency unit," concluded the note.
