Haiti - Insecurity : More than 4,000 rapes reported in 2024 (survey)
Between January and December 2024, a total of 6,488 incidents of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) were reported to service providers in the GBV Sub-Cluster. The most recurrent cases include sexual violence (64%), physical violence (20%), psychological and emotional violence (21%).

The number of GBV incidents stood at 631 in December 2024 (an increase of 38% compared to October and November combined). This could be explained by the fact that attacks between armed gangs continued to intensify during these months, particularly in the West and Artibonite departments, which increases the vulnerability of populations.

Service providers in the GBV Sub-Cluster emphasize that reports do not represent the extent of actual cases, as these figures depend on the voluntary declaration of victims.

Some victims have experienced trauma so profound that they can no longer even remember the events precisely. For fear of reprisals, they do not dare to file a complaint. In addition, legal services remain expensive and there is a lack of resources to support services and courts that are struggling to function.

Safe spaces and transit centers for temporary emergency accommodation for victims are still too rare, precarious and ill-adapted. Finally, many victims live on the streets or in communities and do not even have access to a telephone to call a GBV hotline.

As observed since the beginning of 2024, access to holistic care services that include medical care, access to temporary accommodation, case management services including security and psychosocial services remain low. Indeed, in terms of medical care, 29% of rapes reported in December received treatment within 72 hours of the rape…

Some key figures :
54% Rape / penetration (3,513)
10% Sexual assault (618)
20% Physical assault (1,326)
21% psychological violence (1,331)

A total of 64% of GBV incidents against women and girls are cases of rape and sexual assault. These acts are most often committed by members of armed gangs.

Profile of GBV victims :
Women : 76%
Girls : 17%
Men : 5%
Boys : 2%

All categories of population are exposed to GBV :
62% internally displaced (4,004)
29% residents / others (1,902)
3% migrants (218)
2% returnees / deportees (168)

Profile of GBV perpetrators :
Almost all alleged perpetrators of GBV are men (99%) over 18 years old (68%). The main alleged perpetrators are mostly members of armed gangs (64%) followed by civilians (36%).
