Haiti - Humanitarian : Launch of the 2025 Response Plan of nearly 1 billion US dollars

The humanitarian community in Haiti is launching the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan to help the most vulnerable populations. This Plan highlights a humanitarian situation that is further deteriorating, with 6 million people who will need humanitarian assistance this year (nearly half of the population). Humanitarians are targeting 3.9 million people in vulnerable situations, which will require funding of US$908.2 million.

The year 2024 marked a worsening of the humanitarian situation, with an intensification of violence leading to loss of life, mass displacement and the collapse of basic social services. In 2024, 5,600 people were killed, while the number of displaced people more than tripled to over one million people, more than half of whom are children. Basic social services are on the brink: by the end of the 2024 school year, more than 900 schools were closed, and only 27% of health facilities with beds nationwide were fully functional. Food insecurity is at a critical level, affecting 5.5 million people.

Women and children are particularly exposed to the consequences of this crisis. Between January and November 2024, 5,857 incidents of gender-based violence were reported, the majority of which involved sexual violence, the proportion of which against children increased by 1,000% between 2023 and 2024. On the other hand, forced recruitment of children by armed groups increased by 70% over the past year, and it is estimated that up to half of the members of armed groups are children.

"Haiti is going through an unprecedented crisis, a multidimensional whirlwind that has transformed an already serious situation into a colossal humanitarian challenge. But in this darkness, Haiti still shines with hope and dignity; these people refuse to give in to adversity. Hand in hand, Haitian and international humanitarians work tirelessly in an insecure environment to provide vital assistance to the most vulnerable," said Ulrika Richardson, Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti. "For 2025, we need $908 million. This is not just a number: these are children who dream of going to school, families who want a roof over their heads, young girls who deserve to live in safety, women who can no longer bear the fear of being raped. Today, more than ever before, we call on donors for support and generosity to support the Haitian Government’s efforts to help its vulnerable population."
