Haiti - FLASH : Pope Francis suffers two acute respiratory attacks

While on Sunday March 2nd, 2025 the health bulletin of the Holy See reported "[...] Pope Francis "did not need non-invasive mechanical ventilation, but only high-flow oxygen therapy, he has no fever [...] The isolated attack of bronchospasm on February 28 had no direct consequences" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-44400-haiti-news-zapping.html , the bulletin of the Holy See of Monday March 3 announced that Pope Francis was the victim of two acute respiratory attacks in the afternoon.

"Today, the Holy Father presented two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by a significant accumulation of mucus leading to bronchospasm [...] Two bronchoscopies were therefore performed with the need to aspirate abundant secretions. In the afternoon, non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed [...] During the treatments, Pope Francis remained vigilant."

The bulletin states that the values of the blood tests carried out on the Holy Father are unchanged and reveal the absence of leukocytosis (increase in the number of white blood cells), a positive result which shows that there is no new infection, but that the accumulation of mucus is the consequence of pneumonia. The two attacks on Monday were caused by the reaction of the bronchi trying to expel the accumulated mucus to eliminate the bacteria.

The clinical picture of the Holy Father therefore remains complex with a situation open to attacks like those that occurred on Monday afternoon. If "the prognosis remains reserved", the bulletin assures that "the Holy Father remained alert, oriented and cooperative at all times".

The health bulletin published this Tuesday morning, March 4th, states "the Pope slept all night and is now resting".
