Haiti - Environment : Training on the processing and recovery of used tires 20/03/2025 09:59:56
The Department of Environmental Education (DERE) of the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) launched a three-day training session (March 18, 19, and 20, 2025) on transforming used tires into useful objects. This initiative is part of the Ministry's efforts to raise awareness, educate, and train students, community organizations, support staff, and employees to encourage waste recovery. Moïse Fils Jean Pierre, the Minister of the Environment, opened the workshop, attended by Ministry employees, a representative from the Ministry of National Education, the consultant, and the DIY enthusiast responsible for the training, among others. In his speech, the Minister emphasized the importance of this training, which aims to equip participants with the skills needed to transform tire waste into useful objects such as chairs, tables, trash cans, belts, and other practical accessories. According to the Minister, this initiative will help change the perception of used tires, which will no longer be considered bulky waste, but rather as a resource to be recovered. Rony Horat, Director of DERE, emphasized the importance of environmental education in raising civic awareness about environmental degradation. He announced that this training will gradually be extended to NS4 students (formerly Rétho and Philo) throughout the country, starting in the municipalities of Delmas, Tabarre, and Pétion-ville. These young people, a key target in promoting eco-responsible behavior, will not only learn how to transform used tires into flower pots, planters, and other useful items, but also understand the principles of the circular economy. During this workshop, Barsabbas Chéry, program consultant, and Hugues Termius, a handyman, presented a classification of different types of waste, including organic, household, industrial, agricultural, and final waste. The artisan also presented his past projects and the practical work planned with the participants. HL/ HaitiLibre
