On Sunday, March 23, the Liberal Party of Canada nominated Marjorie Michel as its candidate to run for the seat of Member of Parliament for Papineau in Montreal in the upcoming elections to be held on April 28. The Haitian-Canadian will succeed former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Marjorie Michel is the daughter of former Haitian Prime Minister Smarck Michel. She was Justin Trudeau's Deputy Chief of Staff. Her nomination allows the party to prepare for the re-election of a dedicated team to the House of Commons. Ouanaminthe Border Market While visiting the far north, Pierre Canisius Guignard, Director General of the Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities, took part in the meeting of the Joint Committee for the Ouanaminthe Border Market. This working session primarily aimed to prepare for the official opening of the binational market, scheduled for May 2025. Discussions with all stakeholders helped define the key steps to be taken and the requirements to be met, for the benefit of the region, before this important event. Clerks : Training of Trainers A training of trainers session was conducted at the School of Magistrates, supported by the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP-Haiti) Justice Support and Impunity Program (PAJLI), with funding from the Canadian Embassy in Haiti and in collaboration with the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH). This initiative aims to prepare for the upcoming training of groups of clerks to strengthen the rule of law in Haiti. WHO supports Displaced People in Kenscoff Following an assessment visit to two internally displaced people sites in Kenscoff, where more than 600 people recently sought refuge after fleeing armed violence, the Ministry of Public Health and the World Health Organization (WHO-Haiti) identified urgent needs in health and essential services. WHO provided support for: Distributing WASH equipment to improve sanitation conditions; Training site focal points on hygiene and sanitation (WASH); and Training teams on the use of first aid kits. WHO-Haiti, with support from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF), remains committed to working alongside the Ministry to support displaced populations and improve their living conditions. Building Rehabilitation Workshop Training workshops were held on the quality of construction materials and techniques for rehabilitating damaged buildings for masons and foremen in the Sud and Artibonite departments. These training sessions aimed to strengthen their technical skills to improve infrastructure sustainability and foster community resilience in the face of major natural hazards. First Black Republican Woman Elected to Congress Passes Away Former U.S. Representative Mia Love of Utah, the daughter of Haitian immigrants and the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, died on Sunday, March 23, at the age of 49.
