Haiti - Sports : Launch of School Sports Games in the West

On Friday, March 28, 2025, Niola Lynn Sarah Dévalis Octavius, Minister of Youth, Sports, and Civic Action, officially launched the West School Sports Games during a ceremony held at the Ayiti Chéri Gymnasium.

This event brought together several thousand students and young athletes, who came to participate in the delegation parade and attend athletics competitions, karate demonstrations, as well as basketball, volleyball, table tennis, and futsal matches.

The Weste School Sports Games, aimed at youth under 17, will feature six disciplines : athletics, basketball, soccer, karate, table tennis, and volleyball. The competitions will be held at eight strategic locations : the Ayiti Chéri Gymnasium, Anglade Park in Petit-Goâve, Ferrus Park in Grand-Goâve, Gérard Christophe Park in Léogâne, Drapeau Park in Arcahaie, Pierre Louis Park in Cornillon, Gérard Santo Park in Croix-des-Bouquets, and Thomassin Park.

In their speech, Délicieux Résiaque, Director of the Haitian Institution of Life and Hope, and Jameson Espérance, a student at Horatius Laventure High School, praised this initiative, which is part of a dynamic effort to promote sports in schools and showcase young talent.

In her address, Minister Octavius ​​strongly emphasized the essential role of sports in "the development of young people and social cohesion," emphasizing the need to channel their energy into structured and value-adding activities. She highlighted the impact of sports competitions in promoting fair play, reducing social tensions, and developing a spirit of discipline and perseverance.

During this ceremony, the Minister presented a batch of sports equipment to the representative of the Pierre Louis de Cornillon Park, marking a historic first for this community, which enthusiastically welcomed this initiative.
