Press freedom : Haiti declines Haiti has fallen 18 places in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), dropping from 93rd in 2024 to 111th in 2025, out of 180 countries, with a score of 51.06. The Dominican Republic ranks 43rd with a score of 69.87, ahead of the United States, which ranks 57th with a score of 65.49. Congratulations on the election of Canada's Prime Minister The Government of Haiti, through Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, extends its sincere congratulations to Liberal Mark Carney on his election victory as Prime Minister of Canada on April 29, 2025. Haiti salutes Canada's democratic maturity and reaffirms its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations based on friendship and cooperation. The Haitian Government takes this opportunity to welcome the election of members of Haitian origin to the Canadian Parliament. Their victory at the polls reflects the dynamism of the Haitian diaspora and its exemplary integration into Canadian democracy. Haiti wishes them every success in fulfilling their mandate. 3 new Directors General The last Council of Ministers appointed Ernst St. Louis as Director General of the National Book Directorate, Emmanuel Silencieux as the new Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Nathan Laguerre as Director General of the Ministry of Sports and Civic Service. Haiti at the 2025 African Photography Oscars Four Haitian photographers will participate in the prestigious 2025 African Photography Oscars (from June 19 to July 19). Sarah Mondésir, Cassendrine Destima, Glaude Evens, and Carlin Trezil were selected for the excellence of their artistic work. This competition will bring together 200 participants from 18 African countries and the diaspora. May 1st : Did You Know ? The Haitian Constitution of 1816 first designated May 1st as the date of the Agricultural Day, as stipulated in Article 34. Later, the 1946 Constitution established Labor Day on the same date, May 1st, as specified in Article 139. Labor Day originated in Chicago, United States, on May 1, 1886, following a national strike demanding an eight-hour work week, as opposed to the usual 10 to 12 hours at the time. This strike mobilized nearly 340,000 workers, and tragically, three people were killed by police during a workers' demonstration.
