Haiti - FLASH : The Mandate of the Multinational Mission expires on October 2nd, 2025 28/05/2025 10:33:26
The current mandate of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission deployed in Haiti to support the Haitian National Police (PNH) expires on October 2nd, 2025. Prime Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi stated that Kenya has expressed its willingness to extend its security deployment in Haiti beyond the September deadline, reaffirming its commitment to the multinational mission aimed at stabilizing Haiti. According to Mudavadi, the United Nations has set aside more than $100 million in a trust fund to support the mission's operations, while the United States has provided financial and diplomatic support. Washington has also officially designated violent Haitian gangs as terrorist-linked entities, paving the way for tougher international sanctions. "One of the assurances we got from the US is continued support for Kenya’s leadership of the Haiti mission," Mudavadi said. With the unwavering support of the UN and the United States, and growing cooperation with Caribbean states such as the Dominican Republic, Kenya appears committed to playing its role, cautiously but firmly. However, the future of the Mission will depend on the international community's response to the evolving situation in Haiti and the Security Council's decision on the Secretary-General's proposals. The matter is now under further consideration by the United Nations, and the Secretary-General has already submitted a report on the next steps. To be continued... SL/ HaitiLibre
