Haiti - Health : Strengthening the public health system 18/06/2025 10:15:39
Dr. Sinal highlighted the efforts made to revitalize the country's major hospitals. He cited in particular the Justinien Hospital in Cap-Haïtien and La Providence Hospital in Gonaïves, where concrete actions have increased the efficiency of the services provided. He also discussed the initiatives undertaken in Jérémie, including the strengthening of the neurology department, which represents a notable advance in the provision of specialized care. The Minister also announced a reorganization within the ten departmental health directorates, marked by the introduction of new leadership focused on performance and the continuous improvement of services provided. In an effort to optimize the support of international partners, the Ministry has engaged in strategic dialogue with donors. A roundtable was recently held to present the Priority Action Framework, a reference document developed by the government to ensure better coordination and more efficient use of international aid. In another highlight, Minister Sinal announced that Haiti had been elected to the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO). This historic election recognizes Haiti's growing role on the global health scene and will enable it to actively participate in major international discussions on public health. Furthermore, as part of National Health Day, the Ministry coordinated a series of activities across the country: breast cancer screening campaigns, awareness-raising on non-communicable diseases, rodent control and fumigation operations, and group physical activities. These actions were carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Civic Action (MJSAC) and the Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights (MCFDF). Finally, to strengthen the health system's capacity, the ministry recently launched a national recruitment campaign for several hundred nurses, midwives, and pharmacists. These professionals will strengthen maternity services across the country, among other things. Regarding the challenges associated with reduced US funding for global health, Dr. Sinal confirmed that USAID is committed to maintaining specific support for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Haiti.
