Haiti - Environment : Dominicans to build Haiti's first solid waste management center

Cilpen Global Business, a Dominican company specializing in solid waste management, announces the expansion of its operations in Haiti with the launch of work on the "Himalaya" project in the town of Limonade (Northeast).
With an initial investment of $20 million, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), this project will be the first controlled landfill of its kind in Haiti.
The project is designed to treat between 450 and 500 tons of solid waste per day during the first 12 months of operation. It is expected to generate more than 150 formal jobs and have a positive impact on more than 600,000 residents of the towns of Cap-Haïtien, Limonade, and Mouchinette. This expansion makes Cilpen the first Dominican company in the sector to extend its sustainable development model to a regional scale.
This initiative, which aims to address the waste management crisis in Haiti, where 70% of waste is disposed of improperly, was carried out under the supervision of the Haitian Ministry of Economy and Finance.
According to Pedro José Cabrera, co-chair of Cilpen, this project demonstrates that "sustainability can be one of the most powerful drivers of progress for a Nation [...] With this project, we are taking a decisive step in bringing our solutions to the Caribbean. The fight against climate change and efforts for a sustainable planet know no borders. This investment in Haiti will provide access to proven technical solutions in the Dominican Republic. Beyond improving environmental and health conditions, these solutions will create job opportunities, strengthen institutions, and contribute to the economic development of vulnerable communities," said Cabrera.
