Haiti - Grand South : Strengthening the fishing industry

As part of the process to strengthen the fishing industry, Minister Joseph met on September 4th, 2025, in Les Cayes, in the locality of Bori, with associations of fishermen and fish merchants, partners of the Program to Support Agricultural and Fisheries Productivity and Improve Rural Infrastructure for Market Access (PAPAIR).

The Minister led a large delegation composed of the Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Directorate, departmental directors, and officials from the Grand Sud region.

Representatives of the associations of fishermen and fish merchants unanimously expressed their satisfaction with the incentives the Ministry of Agriculture has provided them through the PAPAIR Program. "Today, thanks to the modern fishing equipment we received from the Program, we are proud to identify ourselves wherever we are as fishermen, just like other members of the trade. We live off fishing, an economic activity that has now become very profitable."

Many took the opportunity to request additional fishing infrastructure from the Minister, including landing stages, fishing boats, and a cold room, to better maximize fishing efforts and sell their products at the most profitable pace.

In response, the Minister pledged to further intensify institutional support through concrete initiatives such as the short-term training of local human resources in motorized mechanics, and the medium-term provision of a trawler capable of exploiting the marine environment as far out as possible, as well as a seafood preservation system, a refrigeration system, and accessories.

These promises, according to Minister Joseph, amounting to approximately fifty million gourdes, will be financed from taxes collected from the sector before the end of this year.
