Haiti - Justice : 3 penitentiaries under construction for more than 15,000 inmates 07/10/2025 09:28:32
This ceremony, chaired by the President of the Court, Jean-Joseph Lebrun, brought together many prominent figures, including Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Minister of Commerce and Industry James Monazard, Acting Director General of the Haitian National Police (PNH) Vladimir Paraison, and members of the PNH High Command, members of the High Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ), members of the diplomatic corps including the Ambassador of Taiwan (Republic of China) to Haiti, Cheng-hao Hu, and representatives of human rights organizations. The Prime Minister reiterated the Government's commitment to a strong justice system that serves citizens and praised the work accomplished by the judicial authorities. He particularly welcomed the construction of three new penitentiary centers with a total capacity of more than 15,000 inmates. It should be noted that these three prison centers, which meet international standards and are being built in the Centre, North, and South departments, announced on May 5, 2025, by the Minister of Justice, aim to address overcrowding and security issues and strengthen the state's capacity to incarcerate criminals. The Prime Minister highlighted several significant achievements for the 2024–2025 fiscal year, including : • Publication of the decree establishing specialized judicial centers https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-45376-haiti-justice-towards-the-establishment-of-specialized-judicial-centers.html ; • The opening of two new courts in Ouanaminthe and Limbé ; • The strengthening of the judicial system through the appointment of approximately fifty prosecutors ; • The improvement of the operational capacity of civil status offices across the country. Fils-Aimé finally emphasized that the opening of this new judicial year must be understood as a call for shared responsibility between the Government and the judiciary, with a view to building a justice system that is more accessible, more efficient, and truly at the service of citizens. He concluded by stating that this judicial year is intended as an invitation to national unity around justice, the pillar of stability, peace, and democratic renewal. After the ceremony, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé conducted a field visit to downtown Port-au-Prince, particularly to the Champ de Mars, to observe the progress of the rehabilitation and urban revitalization work undertaken by the Government. This work aims to gradually restore public institutions and revitalize the administrative heart of the capital, a symbol of the authority, continuity, and permanence of the State. SL/ HaitiLibre
